Fishing Reports

Very sporatic is how to describe the fishing lately. One here , one there. One thing that has been great is the weather to fish in. Anglers have been able to just sit outside and enjoy the sun while they fish.

Word from different areas on the ice is augering has been extremely easy. The sun on the ice the last few days has seemed to begun to weaken some spots. Ice depths range from 22 inches in plowed spots to others only 13-17 inches thick.

The bite continued to get slower this week so there wasn't much to report. We braved the bitter cold and gave it our best anyway but it was apparently even too cold for the fish.

Yesterday we finally got a break in the weather with some warmer temps and last night the bite showed it. Anglers finally seen some action again sticking to depths about 16-18 ft. This morning showed some action again as well. With better weather we should see better fishing again.

Ice thickness remains about 22 inches. Last year between the low water, limited snow fall, and slow current the ice got very hard and very strong. This year has been more typical, good ice with a blanket of snow to insulate it. Weak spots have remained through the winter to the east, which should help it break easier this year and water levels are higher than last year with a steady, faster current as well.

March 1st is only a week away now and it won't be much longer and I'll be making my daily road trips up the river! Bring on spring! One more reminder, with March 1st comes a smaller walleye slot size; two under 19.5".

Have a great day!

Nick had the only luck tonight fishing with yellow in the deeper house (about 22ft).

The up and down in the weather brings ups and downs to the bite as well. One more day of bitter cold for the week and we begin to warm with 30's expected on the weekend!

Tonight the more shallow house (18ft) was more active. Best colors were a variety again, ranging from pinks to orange to yellow seemed to hit.
Size tonight was 17-18" and a couple small ones. We also had a northern hit.
Mild temps today made it pleasant from the otherwise normal cold. We're starting to look forward spring now!

The last couple days the bite has been good. Mornings have been better than before too. It's not one after another but steady.

Brian got this 26" walleye at 10:30pm! Not typical for the walleye in the area but obviuosly not unheard of. That was the biggest of the group. Art was next with a 23".

It's begining to snow tonight and looks like it may be quite a bit. Temps have been above zero with an exception coming up for a day or two.

The depths they've been fishing are 19-22 ft currently and colors have been varying.

Yesterday was SUPER cold! The temp dropped in the early morning hours of Saturday. The morning bite was good and then the winds picked up and the temp dropped fast.
Last evening we didn't get skunked (left) but it was quiet and COLD. One groups biggest walleye for the day was 20".
This week it should rebound nicely and hopefully the stability will pick the bite up again!

It was an exciting day in Baudette yesterday with FSN in town televising live from the Baudette Bay. Once again our own Lake of the Woods Bears defended home town outdoor ice winning 5-0 against Eveleth-Gilbert for Hockey Day Minnesota. Another great game was Roseau and Blaine where the Rams beat the Bengals 1-0. Both spectators and players endured a -42 below windchill factor!

Only a couple here and a couple there the last couple nights. Lots of fish on the graph but they don't seem to want to bite.

Tomorrow comes a drastic change in weather so I thought tonight would be better, maybe tomorrow.

Ones we have caught are right on the bottom. Biggest of the day was a 22" walleye caught this morning.

Ice is about 22" where we're fishing but thickness varies in most areas.

Ryan and I got these about 5pm tonight. We could only fish for about an hour and a half tonight, and of course we got these right before we had to head in, but I think if we'd had more time we could have got a few more.

We had white glow and the red glow on but it was quiet so I tried a yellow/orange spoon jig and these hit on it right away. The biggest was 19 inches.

Speaking of two walleye, don't forget the limit will change March 1st to 2 under 19.5" (no walleye over 19.5).

Yesterday was a very slow day on the river but today showed signs of coming around again. Kirk got walleye to bite again tonight and I also had a couple after being skunked last night. Kirk's dad, Ed, found his luck with the tip-ups today with this very impressive northern measuring almost 40 inches!

We had snow off and on today and temps were in the mid 20's.

Kirk was fishing at about 21 ft and I got some at 19 ft.

The walleyes were very quiet today but the northern were hitting the tip-ups hard.

Darrell had a 41 inch northern that weighed almost 16lbs about 1:30 this afternoon and Don's showing a 30 inch also caught on a tip-up today. The 41 inch was at a depth of 7ft.

Sturgeon were biting this morning and evening as well and we'll post some photos of them soon.

Tonight showed many walleye on Vexlar but we couldn't get them to bite. Only a few small saugers were taking the bait and we had anglers at many different depths.

Yesterday the bite was a little quieter. Everyone got a few though so it was still fun. Art caught and released the biggest of the evening bite, this 25.5 inch.
