Fishing Reports

Monday, May 28, 2007

Well I hope everyone had a great weekend! We were very busy around here, it was great. Even though Saturday left us saturated Sunday and Monday were great. Northern were biting, this one was 12lbs, and smallies are biting, although so far they have been small, they'll only get bigger. One good spot has been at the top of the rapids in the Rapid River. Nick was fishing in deeper water this weekend looking for walleye and managed to find sauger as well. Another group reported getting a few walleye as well so things are picking up on the river!

Memorial Day weekend is coming! Although rain will threaten us off and on all week, it is expected to clear out for the weekend. If you're looking for last minute accommodations we do have one cabin left for the weekend.

Things are beginning to look alot greener around here despite the dry conditions. The Lake of the Woods is a very beautiful place in the summer and one good thing about the dry conditions is no mosquitoes! It makes fishing during the day and sitting by the fire at night very pleasant.

The water levels remain low so be careful traveling the river. Be careful when launching at Vidas, the low water leaves most the ramp exposed and it drops of quickly after it.

Northern are biting, rapulas or daredevils, of course. Seeing alot of bass boats in the bays and smallies are begining to chime in.

I told Ryan to go check the water temp because someone was asking, maybe I should tell him a better way this time of year? Nah....

It's between 58 and 60 degrees on the river.

Fishing has been quiet the last couple days but it didn't stop Nick and Ryan. They took some daredevils down to the dock and pulled in a couple of northern.

Yesterday we got some much needed rain, but not alot. The recent system might be why the fishing slowed a bit. Anglers here did manage to pull into walleye and sauger and also tie into a good size sturgeon that got away.

Art caught this smallie right off the dock this morning, so they are beginning to bite. We both had quite a few northern off the dock as well.

Rain has held off today so far and looks like we may get missed again. More chances continue through the weekend but not a wash out by any means. Wind could be a factor though for opener.

Well the prespawns are over and the regular season is about to swing into full gear! The northern are active and the smallies will be biting shortly, in fact, we've heard they have started to bite in the Baudette bay. If you weren't able to get your sturgeon in the prespawn season, not to worry, July it will open again for another shot!

Theis's had a good day! 63" and 53". They also had another 53.5" and others.

The rain stayed away today but the wind hung around. We had a shower about 10pm but it moved on. We'll see what tomorrow brings. We'd like the rain to hold off till Monday but with a fire danger level at "extreme" rain is a good thing!

It's one thing to boat a 54" sturgeon but a whole different ball game to do it yourself! Lee K sent us this photo from last weekend and he also brought a 60+ inch up to the boat and it snapped the line before he got it in the boat! Thanks for the pic! See ya later this summer!

The pelicans seemed to be doing better sucker fishing than we were this evening, but it was a beautiful night for trying! Nets weren't producing much, hook and line did better.
This weekend is the last weekend for sturgeon prespawn and we do have 2 cabins left. Many sturgeon were caught and released last weekend. Most remained around 50", give or take, with the Hiller party finding a 58.5". Sunday was better for the Wolfe party and the water seems to have cleared after getting a little murky last weekend. Hopefully we'll see more 60+ inchers make an appearance this weekend before the end of the season!
