Fishing Reports

Kevin caught and released his 1st sturgeon today measuring nearly 50 inches!

We've also had a couple other anglers with sturgeon about the same size. They weren't extremely active today but the beautiful weather makes it enjoyable either way!

Friday, April 27, 2007

Just like we we're told, this week has been beautiful and the weekend will be more of the same. We should have more photos of sturgeon soon. A group fishing out of Birchdale had a 62" and also a 49" among others. This morning anglers in front of the bay were doing well. One of their catches were 53" sturgeon, they also caught and released a 28" walleye. This afternoon I was down by the bay and the suckers (redhorse) are very active jumping right out of the water every minute or two. Water temp right now is at about 51 degrees.

Sturgeon prespawn opens tomorrow until May 7th and OMG! Look what Tim caught and released! 68 inches and only 20 minutes! Weather this week is expected to be great so don't miss out!

Saturday, April 21, 2007

The Dewey group had a great day on the river catching and releasing over 35 sturgeon! This is one and more appear on the brag board. They range between 45" to 54"!

Clementson Bay is open today! Zack and I couldn't resist and took the paddle boat for a ride around the bay. This picture was taken standing atop a sandbar, it's still very low. Rain will help and although we didn't see any for the majority of the day, it did start about 4pm. Anglers came in grabbed rain gear and headed right back out! We'll be showing more sturgeon photos so keep watching!

Gary is showing us what's to be expected in the next couple weeks with this huge sturgeon! Look at that girth!
We're still waiting for the bay to open, it's almost there now and the remaining ice was very dark yesterday. Rain would have helped but the dry atmosphere kept the rain away. Off and on showers are expected tomorrow but not a wash out. It wouldn't hurt to green things up! And the sturgeon fishing doesn't slow from weather patterns as easiliy as walleye.

The Rainy River area poses some great photo opportunities. Steve N sent me this photo that he took fishing this prespawn and it is currently my screensaver. I also have a local person with an abundance of Sharp-tailed grouse and has set up a blind for anyone interested in a great photo opportunity before you head out on the river. One morning they had 25 males and 3 females. This is one of the photo's they were able to get. Please call us for more information.

We've been receiving some great photo's from the '07 prespwan season! These were sent from the Zubyhasfun group. Their days consisted of catching 80-100 fish per day with their largest walleye at 9.5lbs! Check out the brag board for more pics from this group and others with some great catches! Thank for the photos!

The beautiful weather opened the river clear to Silver Creek now. This is a photo of Vidas landing near us. The bay here isn't open yet but it's only a matter a day or two now.

Well the prespawn walleye season has gone by for another year. Who would have guess the river would wait to the last week of the season to produce? Anglers were able to see some fantastic fishing before the end of the season! Art and I would like to again thank the numerous anglers who stopped by and guests who also pitched in and helped ease the cost that goes into river updates. And to all the letters and emails of appreciation. We'll definitely be out there again next year! Let's just hope the river doesn't wait until the last week of the season to be gracious!

Even if you didn't get a chance to stay here this year we'd love to see your catches! If you'd like to be posted just email me your photo with a quick note. We'd love to see them!

Walleye fishing may be taking a break but northern pike and small mouth bass continues in the river. May and June are great months for smallie fishing in the river and let's not forget sturgeon! Anglers will be out for catch and release this weekend and the sturgeon prespawn season opens April 24th for two weeks to keep one. Watch for photos of some BIG fish in the next couple weeks!

Looked like a busy day at Frontier today. Also beautiful weather! The river has opened around a corner I can't see from the road now on it's way to Vidas landing. Can any of you anglers on the river today or yesterday give us a landmark it's currently at on the comment section? Ice at Vidas was very dark today and will most likely let go in the next day or two. It won't be in time for the end of prespawn walleye fishing but will be for the sturgeon season right around the corner! We still have availability for the sturgeon season but it's going fast just give us a call!

A 66" sturgeon for Joe S! Nice fish! It's great to see anglers holding them safely also.

Thursday, April 12, 2007

Seth, Tyler and Mark boated many fish today and these are a few of the photo worthy catches! Walleyes measured 29.5" and 30.25" and the sturgeon measured 48"!
We had a last minute opening for Friday and Saturday night in our 4 bedroom cabin, sleeps 6. Give us a call if interested 1-800-433-6085. It won't last long!

This is what Frontier landing looked like today. Very little ice left. Water is still clear. Water levels are steady and walleyes are still biting!

Wednesday, April 11, 2007

Anglers did well again today. Word is mornings are extremely good. Air temperature was in the 40's today but the wind on the river was pretty chilly. Water temp was reported at about 37 degrees. Water levels at the Fork rivers and Manitou continue to steadily go down. As expected boats were being pushed over ice at Frontier today. As of 5pm tonight there was about 10yds of shore ice at the ramp left. Yesterday there was more than twice that so it shouldn't stick around long. One group reported doing well with pink or pink/white jig and minnow. Still no big changes in the weather pattern except it will be getting warmer!

Tuesday, April 10, 2007

The Amato group boated 84 walleyes today and 118 yesterday. A 27.5" is the largest walleye they caught so far. They've also tangled with some sturgeon including this 61"!

Galde's group boated 70 walleye today! Another group that emailed me said his group boated 50 before noon. The fishing is definitely getting good!

A 26" for the Merkins group today!
Frontier has open water! The river opened right down the middle to mile marker 146. Standing on the landing you can see anglers about 1/4 mile to the east where line of ice hinders them from coming farther west but by tomorrow that should be no problem and you should be able to slide small boats in over shore ice at Frontier! We were in the 40's today and the bad weather has managed to stay south of us!

Monday, April 09, 2007

Last group coming in tonight caught 52 walleyes today. Although they did catch a couple in the 20+ range they watched a 30" get boated from afar. Water temp ranged 35-38 degrees, reporting warmer closer to the ice. Biting on green (one reporting green twisters were hot) gold was also reported to be hot and another angler was doing awesome on an ice fishing jiggin spoon. Anyone who has a great catch that they'd like to share is welcome to send it by mail or email and we'd be glad to post it!

It's hard to make out from the photo but standing at Frontier landing this evening you could see open water. The open spot expanded a great deal today. Open water is reaching just west of marker 149 (Frontier marker 148). Anglers were blocked by broken ice at marker 150 tonight but if it continues it's progress like today it won't be a problem to reach farther tomorrow and it should break open at Frontier very soon. A system is passing to the south of us but we're in the clear of that from what they tell us. Water levels at the Fork rivers and Manitou are currently on the decline. Anglers continue to have better fishing every day.
Birchdale opened wide again this morning so bring your big boat! Open water remains at about mile marker 150 with opens spots between there and about marker 148. The weather remains beautiful so Frontier should not be too far out now. Water levels remain steady and clarity remains great! This photo at Birchdale was about 8:30am.

Roark's were at it again today boating 30 walleye including the 27" and 25" shown here. The fishing is getting better by the day!

Happy Easter!

It's a beautiful day today and the temperature is not torture! They were breaking ice again this morning at Birchdale, however alot less today, and tomorrow should be even less with the nice weather. (finally) We have anglers out again today so hopefully we'll have more pictures similar to the Roark's catch yesterday. We're in a stable weather pattern that will remain through the week!

I would like to say "Thank You" to those of you who have stopped by with and also mailed donations to help with the cost of checking the river everyday. It is very much appreciated! Thanks again! And keep watching, this last week could get interesting! They say "All good things come to those who wait" and as slow as this river has opened this year we deserve one heck of a good week of fishing!

This sure takes the sting out of a cold day! After breaking the trail today at Birchdale the Roark group had some nice catches today. They said it was still a little slow but this helped!

Yesterday remained cold. Anglers had to bust through the ice at Birchdale to get to the open water. (shown here) Some anglers that broke the trail yesterday told us it took a long time but the fishing was pretty good once they got through, other anglers did "ok". Reports from many anglers on the river is it not muddy and as you can see from the recent photos how blue the water is. If it were you could tell just by looking at it from the shore even. Water temp only in the lower 30's could be what's hindering the bite. Today temps are near thirty and tomorrow through the end of the week will be near 40 degrees or more. Could this be the week? Usually there is one super week of fishing during prespawn and guessing which one it will be is the hard part, exspecially with such a strange year. Temps near 40 degrees and sun will warm the water and also move the ice but not so fast to cause a muddy river. Also no rain is expected this week, also a good thing. Last week felt like January not April! I seen the Little Fork yesterday and it continues to have ice but more open water shows now. Water levels remain low and steady.

Thursday, April 05, 2007

We're still sitting with the open water around mile marker 150 (the big blue silo). It has some open spots beyond but it looks like Frontier will still be at least a couple days yet. They were putting large boats in at Birchdale then today it got tricky, shore ice breaking off from up river lodged itself at Birchdale and froze, the anglers today broke a trail through to get out to the water and headed west. It's a beautiful day and the weather's stable, hopefully we'll hear of some big walleye soon! One person asked about the Fork Rivers and the last time I was as far east as the Big and Little Forks they were broken in spots, maybe some of that ice that came down the river in front of Birchdale was from them, I'm not sure. I have some anglers up that way today and I'll ask them how they looked. I do know the water levels have steadied there.

Wednesday, April 04, 2007

I thought I was seeing things today but no it really was the sun! Yesterday was a hard day for fishing. The cold, wind and then the snow started about 2pm and that was enough for for most anglers. We only got about an inch of snow yesterday and sounds like we got pretty lucky compared to south of here. Water at the Little Fork are steady again, the Big Fork is going down and so is the level at Manitou. Cooler temps will continue the next couple days but seeing sun will make it more bearable. The stability in the forecast should help too. Next week looks good and I got my fingers crossed for good fishing too! Still waiting for Frontier to open, I'm not going to say it won't be long because quick is not the pattern this year but I'll be waiting.

Tuesday, April 03, 2007

The ice in front of the Birchdale landing has moved out except these last chunks. Open water hasn't moved far from where it was Sunday. Approximately marker 151 or it might be easier to recognize by the big blue silo on the Canadian side (note pic #1). The week is expected to be chilly but the sun should show an appearence around Thursday and the temps should start to pick up too. Fishing has picked up despite the cold weather. Anglers are now averaging between 16-18 catches per group in a day which is up from two to none!! Water temp from a group here had 32 degrees today.

Monday, April 02, 2007

Fishing out of Birchdale today the Anderson group pulled in 15 walleyes and one 53" sturgeon. A couple were thrown back in the 20+ range but no real big ones yet. Water level at Manitou is on the way down again, the Big Fork is one the way down as well and the Little Fork is stabilizing. We don't have any rain in the forecast but we're on the northern fringe of some snow coming through south of us, yuck. My youngest was down with the flu today so I didn't get up the river today but I will tomorrow.

No Aprils Fools!

Birchdale broke early this morning. Just the ice shown here is all that's left at the Birchdale landing. Open water stretches to mile marker 154 now. Showers today are off and on still. Water in the river rose last evening which gave us the push we were looking for. Only thing we need now is the fish to start biting! Frontier landing will be next, about 7 miles to go.
