Fishing Reports

This week we've seen some great weather, much needed passing showers and quiet fishing. No big ones or great numbers but everyone seems to have no trouble catching supper. Tomorrow is July 1st which begins sturgeon fishing again. It will run through September 30th. Don't forget to pick up a tag ($5) you can keep one per year. Slot limit is 45-50" or over 75". Have a great 4th of July weekend!

We've had some thunderstorms roll over us this week and give us some much needed rain. According to the USGS graph we still could use more with gage height measuring at 3.53' today at Manitou Rapids. Beautiful days to be on the river even with quiet fishing. We had a group set out right before dark last night and catch some nice size walleyes right where the bay and river meet. Smallies were biting off the dock again and northern are hitting but haven't seen any like Andy's this week.

On his way back into the bay this evening Andy pulled in this 41" northern, girth measured 17".

The water in the river continues to decline. The sandbar coming into the bay is above the water level now so be careful coming in and out of the bay and along the river. We had a little rain today with a chance again tonight. Ontario DNR asked that any shore lunches be prepared on camping stoves, no open fires for the time being. I apologize for the comment section recently. It hasn't been used for what I intended. All comments will have to get my approval from now on. Us and others would love to hear how your fishing trips have gone so far this summer! Good or bad, rain or shine! We'd like to hear everything from what bait you used to what depth you had the best luck with. Everyone appreciates a hint. We'll understand if your vague on the location!

The weather is definitely nicer this week, mid 80's. We have a chance for rain Thursday and Friday that we can definitely use. It is very dry and water levels are low. USGS gage height is 5.01' at Manitou Rapids as of today. That's down from approximately 6.75' just last Friday. I can tell by the bay of course. The rapids from the Rapid River (left)are very low. Water temps are still warm and the boys have been loving that to swim. Fishing is good in the evening. We're seeing more walleyes and sauger mostly in the 15-17" range. Bass are more quiet and northern are getting bigger 22-26" range. Fishing is good along the shoreline and better by the inlets and bays going into the river about 8-10' of water. Sturgeon don't seem to know their out out of season till July 1st. Couple anglers have got a sneek peek of them this week.

This 23.5" northern was caught this morning in the Clementson Bay by Becky Linge. She was fishing with crawlers. Others here caught a few walleye and sauger out in the river last night, hopefully we'll have pictures this evening. Temps are much cooler this weekend than we've had with highs in the 60's. We missed all the rain yesterday.

I have about a million things I'd like to say to those "anonymous" people who obviously are not fisherman and not even big enough to put a name to what they feel, but I'll try to keep it short. Anonymous comments will no longer be able to be placed. This website is for people who enjoy fishing, river conditions and fishing information, not those who criticize it. I was hoping the comment section could be used by fisherman but we're not seeing any pointers or fishing tips and very little in the way of encouragement, but thank you to those of you who do. I don't want my guests afraid of being on the website because of what "anonymous" people might have to say. For now you'll have to log in to comment. If the comment section is still abused in the future it will have to be eliminated.

Steve Hunter and his boys Cody and Cameron caught these northern on their last day with us. Good job guys!

It's been a beautiful week this week. We've had anglers do well this week, average and not so good. The Hunter group did very well fishing this week catching many northerns, one was over 30inches! They also caught numerous smallies. Most of their best fishing was where the Silver Creek meets the Rainy River. They fished out at the point by the Clementson Bay this morning and caught a couple walleye, said they were using crawlers. This afternoon they went site seeing in Canada. When the fishing was quiet this week for one party they didn't let it get them down they hit the golf course at Lake of the Woods instead! Cooler temps are exspected this weekend with thunderstorms in the forcast for Friday.

Memorial Day weekend proved to be hot one this year! With the water temp in the bay in the 70's my boys and their cousins couldn't resist jumping in to cool off! This week was more normal with temps in the 70's and 80's. Fishing was good Tuesday evening in the bay. Northerns were hitting and my son Nick was having luck with the smallies. Went out on the river for walleye yesterday but the wind kept the river pretty rough so we didn't have much luck . Water temp in the river is at about 67 degrees this week.
