Darryl, also with the Erickson party, got up bright and early this morning and tagged this 49.75" sturgeon right in the Clementson Bay!

Saturday, April 29, 2006

Deb Rinde reeled in and tagged this 48" sturgeon this weekend. She was staying with the Erickson party. We had a full house this weekend with sturgeon anglers. All parties boated between 7-10 sturgeon to a boat. The Wolf party tagged a 49". The Larson groups largest was 60" with a 27" girth. Even with the drizzle and cool temps our groups did very well and had a great time reeling in these monsters. Weather is to remain cool and cloudy. Birchdale is said to be a hot spot for sturgeon right now, but most of our anglers have did their best right where the Clementson Bay and the Rainy join. Bait of choice is nightcrawlers, of course. Water temp was reported at 52 degrees today. The season is short to tag your sturgeon so don't miss out on the fun! We still have a few cabins available for the last weekend of sturgeon season. We're still waiting on some photos from Tuesday and the 60" sturgeon the Larson group caught.

More sturgeon report are coming in. The harvest season opened on Monday and will run until May 7th. The Hiller party had a couple great days. Yesterday they pulled in 7. Lengths recorded were 49",50.25",37.25,52.25 with a 20.5" girth,57.75"-24"girth,55.5"-22"girth and 37"-14.25"girth. Today 57.5"long-26.5"girth,46"long-18"girth,56"long-22"girth,49.75"long-17.5"girth, and the last was 49"long. Pictures are being emailed and I'll make sure to get them up. They had such a good time we'll be seeing them again this weekend! Remember to get your tag, you can tag and keep 1 per year. It needs to be 45-50" long or over 75" to tag. We'll have more reports this week. Weather has been a little chilly but beautiful! They expect it to get warmer through the week with a chance of rain Thursday night into Friday but the weekend looks good so far.

Our last group of sturgeon anglers reported having a great time wrestling with the sturgeon this week. They boated one that was 43". Pulling one up to the boat about 60"+ until, as the group put it, spit the hook out at them and swam off. They wrestled one for 75 minutes only to have it tie into a log, one straighten out a hook and another come in like a log until he decided he had enough! Thanks guys for the great update, we're glad you had a good day despite the wind. This morning was rainy, mostly sprinkles. Sun came out late this afternoon, but more rain is expected tomorrow. The weekend looks good with temps back in the lower 60's.

Some of our regulars are back for another season. At last count tonight there were just over 60 pelicans in the bay. We even had a pair of loons. It's quite a thing to see. Water levels on the river are still on the decline and most of the debris has made it's way through. River is getting clearer everyday. The wind the last couple days has made it difficult for our sturgeon fisherman. Rain is supposed to come tonight and most of the day tomorrow. Better weather comes back on Thursday. The temps will be back to the normal April temps, in the upper 50's. Not in the 70's where they've been and where we'd like them to be again soon. Anyone have better luck with the sturgeon?

Today is the last day of prespawn and the last of our anglers weren't disappointed. I posted Bill Shipmans pictures on the Brag Board. Him and Karl were here on the 12th. Some going home tomorrow had a good day today and will be emailing me pics when they get home. Others are still out. I had some trouble with posting pictures, that's why it hadn't changed for awhile. The problem is solved now and I'm gathering my photos to post. If you sent me some that aren't posted please resend them so I can. And if you have some you forgot to share, please share them. Prespawn is over, but sturgeon is just beginning! Right now is catch and release, but don't miss your chance to keep a big one April 24th-May7th. It's a small window so don't wait. We are filling up fast so give us a call we'd love to have you! Have a Happy Easter!

We got reports from 3 different sections of the river today. 1st group fished the gap. The water temp was 41 degrees there and they did well. Caught their limit of walleye and also boated a couple sturgeon. Used the term "chocolate milk" for clarity. It was better in the a.m. afternoon was very windy. 2nd group didn't do as well. They launched here at Clementson and headed east. With the strong wind today it made it too difficult. A few from their group stayed back and just did some fishing off the dock but all they got was a sucker. The 3rd group did the best. Caught their limit and had some dandy pictures of walleyes between 25" and 29". I wish I could show you the pictures but he didn't have the cord for the digital camera and I didn't have the right memory slot. He'll be emailing them to me when he gets home. They were sweet. They launched at Birchdale and headed to the rapids and sat at the front of them. Clarity was once again termed "chocolate milk". Beautiful day again today despite the wind. Temps in upper 60's. Chance of rain for tomorrow, but not a significant amount.

Once again it looks as if the season ended way too soon. The river is still hanging on to the mud. The beautiful weather we're having is expected to finish our week out, but it may not help the river out enough before the end of the prespawn season. If we hear of any clearing at Birchdale before the end of the week we'll let you know.

Water levels are on the decline at Little and Big Forks. The levels are also on the decline at the Manitou Rapids, which means less water coming from the Falls. Anglers at Clementson fished Peland over the weekend catching walleye and northern also had some suckers. With the declining water levels should come cleaner water! Weather has been warm and dry which is also good news.

Took a trip up to the lake today to check it out. The boys are right on the comment section. Gap is open but muddy. Talked to some anglers today that didn't have much luck there today so they were heading to Peland as well. The Clementson Bay broke up alot today, shouldn't be much longer till it completely opens. My boys are waitng as patiently as they can to drop a line in there. The water level at the Big Fork is leveling off and the Little Fork is showing signs of the same. With more water coming out of the Falls the Rainy itself remains high. You'll be the first to know if we see signs of clearing water. The rain missed us, we had a beautiful day again today. Our thermometer registered 58 degrees.

Reports are that the Little Fork broke yesterday. More water is being released from the Falls now also, so water levels are high. Sturgeon are still biting in this area. Most who are looking for walleye are still going to Peland or going out to the Lake of the Woods. Weather here is finally warm, upper 50 to low 60's. Chance of rain tomorrow, but it might sail south of us. The Clementson Bay is still got ice.

Sorry guys, went to do a report Saturday evening and had no connection on my dial up. First I asked the kids what they did, next called somebody. My modem was fried. The closest I could get one without ordering was Bemiji. But I got it fixed! I wish I could tell you the river was clean again but I can't. However the Little Fork water level has started to level off, but their letting more water out at the Falls. We'll have to wait and see. In the mean time guys have been going to Peland and doing well. Anglers have also had good luck with the Sturgeon, one angler reported catching quite a few yesterday. 3 of them over 51". The river has almost opened to the Lake of the Woods now, which is also very good fishing. I'd like to thank those of you who are able to answer questions on the comment page, it helps me out a great deal with things I don't have the answer to (or when my computers down) Thanks again!
